The original Whack-a-Mole machine was invented in Japan in 1975 by Aaron Fechter for Bob's Space Racers. It started as a carnival midway game and grew into one of the most recognized reflex tests in arcade history. The concept is simple: moles pop up from holes, and you hit them before they retreat. Research on reaction time and aging shows that fast-paced visual motor tasks can help maintain processing speed in adults over 60 (see the Salthouse 1996 study below). Our version adds golden moles, bombs, and a combo system on top of the classic formula. Click moles, avoid bombs, and chase a high score directly in your browser.
Three normal moles pop up in holes 1, 5, and 9. You click hole 1, then hole 5, then hole 9 within 1.5 seconds. Your combo reaches level 3, adding 10 bonus points to the 30 base points.
At the 40-second mark, a golden mole appears in hole 3 while a bomb sits in hole 7. You resist clicking the bomb, snap to the golden mole, and collect 50 points plus a combo bonus.
In the final 15 seconds, moles stay up for only 0.8 seconds and spawn every 0.7 seconds. You switch to keyboard input, pressing keys 1 through 9 as moles appear, maintaining a combo through the fastest phase of the round.

| Version | Difficulty | Players | Typical Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whack-a-Mole | Easy to Hard | 1 | 1-2 min |
| Simon | Easy to Hard | 1 | 1-5 min |
| Memory Match | Easy | 1 | 2-5 min |
Each round lasts 60 seconds. The difficulty increases automatically as the timer counts down, with moles appearing faster and staying up for shorter periods.
A golden mole gives 50 points, which is 5 times the value of a normal mole. Golden moles also stay visible for a shorter time, so you need to react quickly to catch them.
Hitting a bomb subtracts 20 points from your score and resets your combo to zero. Bombs are identifiable by their black body and lit fuse. Let them retract on their own.
Hitting moles within 2 seconds of each other builds a combo. Each consecutive hit adds 5 bonus points per combo level. A 4-hit combo adds 15 bonus points on top of the base score. Hitting a bomb or letting a mole escape resets the combo.
Yes. Number keys 1 through 9 map to the 9 holes in reading order: top left to bottom right. Keyboard input removes cursor travel time, which helps during the fast late-game phase.
Whack-a-Mole is a pure reflex test with enough variety to stay interesting. Golden moles reward quick decisions, bombs punish careless clicks, and the combo system adds a scoring layer beyond speed alone. Start a free round in your browser and see how many moles you can whack in 60 seconds.
