Defend Earth from marching alien invaders. Shoot upward, dodge bullets, erode bunkers, and clear waves before they reach the bottom.

Tomohiro Nishikado designed Space Invaders in 1978, and it became the first arcade game to save high scores. The hardware was so weak that the developer used a custom processor built from discrete logic chips. The game tasks you with defending Earth from a grid of alien invaders that march sideways, drop down, and speed up as you thin their ranks. Research on action video games published in Nature shows that fast-paced shooters improve spatial resolution and visual attention. Your job is simple: shoot upward, dodge bullets, and clear every wave. Start playing our browser version right now.
The wave starts with the grid high on screen. You slide left, fire twice, and destroy two top-row aliens for 60 points before the grid takes its first step.
Three invaders hang directly above your bunker. You duck under the left edge, fire upward through a narrow gap, and pick them off one by one while their bullets erode the right side of the bunker.
The red UFO drifts left across the top. You center your ship underneath, wait for it to pass, and fire. It explodes for 300 points, the maximum bonus.
Play Space Invaders free directly in your browser. No downloads, no registration. Use keyboard, mouse, or touch controls. Your high score saves locally so you can chase a personal best across sessions. Clear wave after wave and see how long you can hold the line.
| Version | Difficulty | Players | Typical Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wave 1 | Easy | 1 | 1 to 2 min |
| Wave 2-3 | Medium | 1 | 3 to 6 min |
| Wave 4+ | Hard | 1 | 5 to 15 min |
Tomohiro Nishikado designed and programmed the original Space Invaders for Taito in 1978. He built the hardware from scratch because existing arcade boards could not handle the processing load.
The original hardware rendered all invaders in a single loop. Fewer invaders meant fewer draw calls per frame, so the loop ran faster. This accidental performance quirk became a defining feature of the game.
In our version, the UFO awards a random bonus between 50 and 300 points. The original arcade used a deterministic system tied to the number of shots fired, but most modern remakes randomize the value.
Yes. Our version includes on-screen left, right, and fire buttons for touch devices. The game adapts to any screen size.
Space Invaders defined the shooter genre and still delivers pure arcade tension. The accelerating march, the eroding bunkers, and the bonus UFO create a loop that never gets old. Move your ship, line up your shots, and start defending Earth.
