Frogger

Konami released Frogger in June 1981, and within months it became one of the highest-grossing arcade cabinets in North America. Sega licensed the game for Western distribution, and by 1982 players were spending an estimated 20 million quarters per week on it. The concept is simple: guide a frog from the bottom of the screen to one of five lily pads at the top. A busy road and a wide river stand in your way. 1. Press an arrow key or WASD to hop one square in that direction. On mobile, swipe in the direction you want to move, or use the on-screen D-pad.
2. Cross the bottom grass strip and enter the road. Cars and trucks move at different speeds in each lane. Pick a gap and hop through.
3. Reach the median safe zone in the middle. Use it to plan your river crossing.
4. Step onto a floating log or turtle shell to cross the river. The current carries you sideways, so time your hops to stay on screen.
5. Aim for an empty lily pad at the top. Land on one to score points and bank your remaining time as a bonus.
6. Fill all five lily pads to complete the level. Each level adds speed and reduces your timer.

• You start with three lives and a countdown timer of 60 seconds on level 1.
• Touching any vehicle on the road costs a life. Falling in the water costs a life. Running out of time costs a life.
• Logs and surfaced turtles are safe to ride. Diving turtles are not safe. Watch for them to disappear under the water.
• You must land on an empty lily pad to score. Landing on the bank between pads costs a life.
• Each forward hop scores 10 points. Reaching a lily pad scores 50 plus a time bonus. Completing all five pads scores a 1,000-point level bonus.
• Losing all three lives ends the game. Your high score saves automatically in your browser.

• Study the lane speeds before you commit. The bottom road lanes move slower, so you can wait for a wide gap. The upper lanes are faster and require tighter timing.
• Keep your frog centered on logs. Riding near the edge risks falling off when the log reaches the screen boundary. If you drift off either side, you lose a life.
• Track turtle dive cycles. Turtles stay surfaced for about three seconds, then dive for two. If a turtle group starts fading, hop to a log or move forward immediately.
• Do not backtrack on the road. Moving down wastes time and puts you in the path of vehicles you already dodged. Forward progress earns points. Retreating earns nothing.
• Use the median strip to reset your position. The grass is safe, so align yourself with a log lane before committing to the river crossing.

• Snake: Another arcade classic where grid-based movement and timing determine survival. Instead of crossing lanes, you grow longer while avoiding your own tail.
• Breakout: A different arcade reflex challenge. You bounce a ball off a paddle to clear bricks instead of hopping across traffic.
• Space Invaders: Shoot upward at marching aliens while dodging their bullets. Shares the lane-based threat pattern with Frogger but adds projectile combat.

• Each run is short. A complete level takes under two minutes, so it fits a quick break.
• The two-terrain design creates two distinct challenges in one game. Road lanes test reflexes. River lanes test timing and positioning.
• Turtle diving adds a layer of risk that rewards observation. Players who track dive cycles survive longer.
• The difficulty curve scales smoothly. Faster vehicles and shorter timers keep pushing skilled players without overwhelming beginners.
