Konami released Frogger in June 1981, and within months it became one of the highest-grossing arcade cabinets in North America. Sega licensed the game for Western distribution, and by 1982 players were spending an estimated 20 million quarters per week on it. The concept is simple: guide a frog from the bottom of the screen to one of five lily pads at the top. A busy road and a wide river stand in your way. Research on action video games published in Nature Neuroscience shows that fast-paced games improve task-switching and spatial attention. Frogger trains timing and risk assessment. Your frog starts at the bottom center. The first lane has slow trucks moving right. Wait for a truck to pass, then hop into the gap. The second lane has fast cars moving left. Time your hop so the car has just cleared your column. Two hops get you to the median.
You reach the river and see a long log drifting right. Hop onto it, then ride it two squares to align with the next lane. The next lane has turtles. Check if they are surfaced. If yes, hop across. If they are fading, wait on the log until they come back up.
Four pads are filled. One remains at the far left. Ride a left-moving log toward the edge, then hop up as your frog aligns with the pad column. The timer shows 12 seconds. You land on the pad, score 50 plus 120 time bonus, and the level completes with a 1,000-point bonus.

Five. Each lily pad you fill stays filled for the rest of the level. Once all five have a frog, the level ends and you receive a 1,000-point bonus.
You drown and lose a life. Turtles cycle between surfaced and diving states. Watch the transparency change and hop to a log or forward before they go under.
Yes. Vehicle and log speeds increase by about 15 percent per level, and the timer drops by five seconds each level, down to a minimum of 30 seconds.
No. If the log carries your frog past the left or right edge, you lose a life. Hop off the log before it reaches the boundary.
Yes. Your best score is stored in your browser's local storage under the key 'frogger-high-score'. It persists across sessions on the same device.
