What Is Sudoku?

Sudoku is a logic-based number placement puzzle that has captivated millions of players worldwide since gaining international popularity in 2005. The game is played on a 9x9 grid divided into nine 3x3 boxes. The objective is to fill every cell so that each row, column, and 3x3 box contains the digits 1 through 9 exactly once. Despite using numbers, Sudoku requires no math skills. It is purely a game of logic, pattern recognition, and deduction. The puzzle originated from a concept called Latin Squares and was popularized in Japan before becoming a global phenomenon.

How to Play Sudoku

  1. Start with a partially filled 9x9 grid. Some cells already contain numbers that serve as clues.
  2. Your goal is to fill every empty cell with a digit from 1 to 9.
  3. Each row must contain the numbers 1 through 9 with no repeats.
  4. Each column must also contain 1 through 9 with no repeats.
  5. Each of the nine 3x3 boxes must contain 1 through 9 with no repeats.
  6. Use logic and elimination to determine which number belongs in each cell.

Basic Rules

  • Every row must contain digits 1 through 9 exactly once
  • Every column must contain digits 1 through 9 exactly once
  • Every 3x3 box must contain digits 1 through 9 exactly once
  • The puzzle has one unique solution
  • No guessing is required for a properly constructed puzzle
  • Numbers already placed cannot be changed

Strategy Tips for Beginners

  • Start with the easiest cells. Look for rows, columns, or boxes that already have many numbers filled in.
  • Use the elimination method. For each empty cell, list which numbers are possible based on the row, column, and box constraints.
  • Look for naked singles, cells where only one number is possible after eliminating all other options.
  • Scan for hidden singles, numbers that can only go in one place within a row, column, or box.
  • Use pencil marks to track possible candidates in each cell. This helps you spot patterns and make deductions.
  • Practice pointing pairs and box-line reduction techniques as you advance to harder puzzles.

Real Examples of Gameplay

Finding a Naked Single

A cell in row 3, column 5 has the numbers 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9 already present in its row, column, or box. The only remaining option is 2, so you can confidently place 2 in that cell.

Using Box-Line Reduction

The number 5 can only appear in the top row of a particular 3x3 box. This means 5 cannot appear in the top row of the adjacent boxes, potentially revealing new placements.

Completing a Region

A 3x3 box has 8 of 9 cells filled with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9. The missing number must be 6. Filling it completes the box and may help solve neighboring regions.

Variations of Sudoku

  • Killer Sudoku: Adds caged groups with sum clues. You must fill cells so the numbers in each cage add up to the given total, with no repeats within cages.
  • Mini Sudoku (4x4 or 6x6): Smaller grids perfect for beginners or quick games. Uses fewer numbers but follows the same logic principles.
  • Diagonal Sudoku: Adds an extra constraint requiring both main diagonals to also contain 1 through 9 with no repeats.

Why People Love Sudoku

  • Sharpens logical thinking and concentration skills
  • Puzzles range from easy to extremely challenging
  • Perfect for short breaks or extended focus sessions
  • No math required, just pure logic and deduction
  • Endless puzzle variety means you never run out of challenges
