Tomas Floden invented Pentago in 2003 during a meeting at the firm where he worked as an account analyst in Sweden. He built the first prototype from ordinary printing paper that same evening. The Swedish company Mindtwister published it in 2005, and it won the Mensa Select award in 2006. In 2014, Geoffrey Irving strongly solved the 6x6 version using a Cray supercomputer at NERSC, proving that the first player wins with perfect play across 3,009,081,623,421,558 possible positions. The game combines placement with a twist: after you place a marble, you rotate one of the four 3x3 quadrants 90 degrees. Line up five to win. Place a marble and make your first twist now.
You place a dark marble in the center of the top-left quadrant. A rotation of that quadrant leaves the marble fixed, so it can anchor a later horizontal, vertical, or diagonal segment. You then study where edge placements would travel around it. The move creates no immediate row, but it gives your next turns a stable reference point.
Light has four marbles aligned through the bottom-right area. You identify the quadrant containing two members of that row and preview a clockwise rotation. It breaks the threat but forms a different light diagonal, so you reject it. The counterclockwise option breaks the original row without completing another, and you choose that safer final position.
Four dark marbles nearly form a diagonal across the left and right halves. You place the fifth marble in a cell that completes the line before rotation. You confirm the winning row on the full 6x6 grid rather than stopping at a quadrant border. Because the game checks the placement, the completed diagonal supplies the win.

Rotation is optional only while neutral quadrants exist. A neutral quadrant is empty or has a single marble in its center. Once all four quadrants are non-neutral, rotation is mandatory.
