Tic Tac Toe, also known as Noughts and Crosses or Xs and Os, is one of the simplest and most universally known strategy games in the world. Two players take turns marking spaces in a 3x3 grid, one using X and the other using O. The first player to place three marks in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal row wins the game. Tic Tac Toe has been played for thousands of years, with evidence of similar games found in ancient Egypt and the Roman Empire. Despite its simplicity, the game introduces fundamental strategic concepts like controlling the center, creating forks, and blocking opponent threats. It is often the first strategy game children learn and serves as a gateway to more complex games like Chess and Connect Four.
X takes the center square. O responds with an edge. X takes a corner, creating two potential lines through the center. This forces O to defend while X builds toward a fork.
X takes opposite corners (top-left and bottom-right). This creates two diagonal threats simultaneously. O can only block one, and X wins on the next move with the other diagonal.
O has two marks in the top row with one empty cell. X must place in that cell to block the win. Missing this block would give O an immediate victory. Always scan for opponent threats before making offensive moves.

If both players play perfectly, the game always ends in a draw. However, against imperfect play, the first player (X) has an advantage and can often force a win by taking the center and creating forks.
Yes. Tic Tac Toe is completely solved. With optimal play from both sides, every game ends in a draw. This makes it a great teaching tool for game theory and strategic thinking basics.
The center square is the strongest first move because it is part of four possible winning lines (both diagonals, the middle row, and the middle column). If the center is taken, a corner is the next best choice.
Tic Tac Toe is where strategy gaming begins. Simple enough for a five-year-old, yet it teaches the fundamentals of strategic thinking that apply to every game you will ever play. Challenge our AI on impossible difficulty and see if you can do better than a draw. Make your move now.
