Checkers

Jump and capture your opponent's pieces to win this classic board game for two players.

What Is Checkers?

Checkers, also known as Draughts in many countries, is one of the oldest and most widely played board games in the world. The game is played on an 8x8 board with 12 pieces per player, positioned on the dark squares. Players take turns moving their pieces diagonally forward, with the goal of capturing all opponent pieces or blocking them so they cannot move. When a piece reaches the opposite end of the board, it becomes a King and can move both forward and backward. Checkers has been played for thousands of years, with evidence of similar games dating back to ancient Egypt around 3000 BCE. Its straightforward rules make it perfect for beginners while still offering genuine strategic depth for experienced players.

How to Play Checkers

  1. Each player starts with 12 pieces placed on the dark squares of their three closest rows.
  2. Regular pieces move diagonally forward one square to an empty dark square.
  3. Capture an opponent's piece by jumping over it diagonally to an empty square beyond it. The captured piece is removed.
  4. If a capture is available, you must take it. Multiple consecutive jumps in one turn are required if possible.
  5. When a piece reaches the farthest row from its starting side, it becomes a King, marked by stacking a second piece on top.
  6. Kings can move and capture both forward and backward diagonally. The player who captures all opponent pieces or blocks all their moves wins.

Basic Rules

  • Pieces move diagonally forward one square onto empty dark squares
  • Captures are mandatory when available
  • Multiple jumps must be completed in a single turn if possible
  • Kings move and capture in any diagonal direction
  • A piece becomes a King upon reaching the opposite end of the board
  • The game is won by capturing all opponent pieces or blocking all their moves

Strategy Tips for Beginners

  • Control the center of the board. Pieces in the center have more mobility and influence than pieces on the edges.
  • Keep your back row intact as long as possible. These pieces prevent your opponent from getting Kings easily.
  • Create King opportunities. Advancing a piece to the King row is a significant advantage since Kings are far more powerful.
  • Use forced exchanges wisely. Sometimes sacrificing one piece to capture two (a two-for-one trade) is a strong strategy.
  • Avoid leaving isolated pieces that can be easily trapped and captured.
  • In the endgame, use your Kings aggressively. A King advantage often decides the game.

Real Examples of Gameplay

Double Jump Capture

Your piece on square 14 can jump an opponent on 18 and land on 23, then immediately jump another opponent on 27 to land on 32. This double jump removes two pieces in one turn, a major advantage.

King Promotion

You advance a piece to your opponent's back row. It becomes a King, now able to move in any diagonal direction. This new King can retreat, attack, and control more of the board than a regular piece.

Forced Exchange

You move a piece into a position where your opponent must capture it. After the capture, your other piece can jump two of their pieces in return. You traded one piece for two, gaining a significant material advantage.

Variations of Checkers

  • American Checkers (English Draughts): The standard 8x8 version with 12 pieces per side. The most widely played version in North America.
  • International Draughts: Played on a 10x10 board with 20 pieces per side. Flying Kings can move multiple squares. Popular in Europe.
  • Brazilian Draughts: 8x8 board with International Draughts rules including flying Kings. Combines the smaller board with enhanced King movement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Checkers a solved game?

Yes. In 2007, researchers at the University of Alberta proved that perfect play by both sides results in a draw. This took 18 years of computation. However, in practice, one mistake by either player can lead to a loss, keeping the game interesting.

Do you have to capture if you can?

Yes. In standard American Checkers rules, captures are mandatory. If you can jump an opponent's piece, you must do so. If multiple captures are available, you may choose which one to take.

What makes Kings special?

Kings can move and capture both forward and backward diagonally. Regular pieces can only move forward. This makes Kings significantly more powerful and flexible, often decisive in the endgame.
