Toru Iwatani designed Pac-Man for Namco in 1980, and the character shape came from a pizza with one slice removed. The game sold over 400,000 arcade cabinets within its first decade. Iwatani wanted to appeal to women and couples, so he built a game about eating rather than shooting. A 2014 study in Computers in Human Behavior showed that playing action games like Pac-Man improves visuospatial attention and reaction time in adults. Your goal is simple. Eat every pellet in the maze while four ghosts chase you. Power pellets flip the script and let you eat the ghosts. Start a game in your browser right now.
You start at the bottom center of the maze. Blinky heads straight for you from the top. Move left and clear the bottom row pellets while Pinky and Inky are still leaving the ghost house. This gives you a 100 point head start before any ghost gets close.
Three ghosts block the top corridor. You grab the power pellet in the top left corner. All three ghosts turn blue. Eat the nearest one for 200 points, then chase the second for 400, the third for 800, and the fourth for 1600. This is called a chain eat, and it is the highest scoring move in the game.
Blinky is two tiles behind you on the left side of the maze. You enter the tunnel on row 9. Blinky follows but moves slower inside the tunnel. You exit on the right side and immediately turn up to grab a cluster of pellets while Blinky is still traversing. The tunnel bought you three seconds of safety.

Each color represents a different AI personality. Blinky (red) chases directly. Pinky (pink) tries to ambush you. Inky (cyan) uses Blinky's position to calculate a target. Clyde (orange) alternates between chasing and retreating to his corner.
A perfect game means eating every ghost during every power pellet, collecting every pellet, and never losing a life. The maximum score on the original arcade version is 3,333,360 points, achieved by eating all four ghosts during each of the four power pellets on every level.
Yes. Ghosts move at reduced speed inside the side tunnels. Pac-Man maintains his normal speed, which gives you a small advantage when escaping a close chase.
The fruit appears periodically near the center of the maze. Eating it gives bonus points that scale with the current level. The fruit disappears after a few seconds if you do not grab it.
The power pellet makes ghosts edible for about 7 seconds. The effect shortens at higher levels. Ghosts flash white in the final 2 seconds to warn you that they are about to turn dangerous again.
Pac-Man remains one of the most recognized arcade games ever built. The maze, the ghosts, and the power pellets create a loop that never gets old. Learn the ghost personalities, save your power pellets, and sweep each quadrant methodically. Start a free game in your browser and chase a new high score.
