President is a shedding card game where the goal is to empty your hand before everyone else. It appeared in the Western world during the 1980s and is a Westernized version of Chinese climbing games such as Zheng Shangyou and the Japanese Daifugo. Most players know it by harsher names like Scum or Asshole, and the social hierarchy is the whole point. The first player out becomes the President, the next is Vice President, and the last player holding cards is the Scum. In the full game the Scum pays a card tax to the President before the next hand, which makes it harder for the bottom player to climb and easier for the top player to stay there. The 2 is the highest card in the deck, outranking even the Ace, which trips up new players who expect Aces to win. A 2020 study in Sustainability on intergenerational play found that shedding and climbing card games strengthen social bonding and strategic thinking across age groups. Deal a hand in your browser and see if you can claim the top seat.
You hold the 3 of clubs and must lead. You play it as a single. The next player beats it with a 5, another plays a 9, and you decide whether to beat the 9 or pass and save your high cards.
The pile holds a pair of 6s. You play a pair of Jacks. Everyone else passes. You win the pile and lead a fresh combination, choosing a low single to start the next cycle.
You hold only a single 4 left. The pile holds a single 3, which you can beat. You play the 4, empty your hand, and claim the President seat while the others fight for the remaining ranks.
Play President directly in your browser against three computer opponents. No downloads. No registration. Claim the President seat and see if the Scum can climb back next hand.
President follows the climbing-game convention where the 2 outranks the Ace. This comes from its Chinese and Japanese ancestors like Zheng Shangyou and Daifugo. The 2 acts as a powerful single card that can beat any other single, which makes it precious late in a hand.
No. You must match the type of the current combination. If the pile holds a single card, only a higher single can beat it. If it holds a pair, only a higher pair can beat it. You cannot switch combination types mid-pile.
The last player who played a card wins the pile. The pile clears, and that player leads a fresh combination of any type they choose. This is the main way you regain control of the game.
Yes. President, Scum, Asshole, Capitalism, and Rich Man Poor Man are all names for the same shedding game. The rules vary slightly between groups, but the core mechanic of climbing combinations and social ranking is shared.
