Canasta was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1940. Two lawyers, Alberto Serrato and Segundo Sanchez, designed it as a faster alternative to bridge. The name comes from the Spanish word for basket, a nod to the tray that held melded cards. By 1953, the Canasta craze had sold more than 30 million decks in the United States alone. The game rewards players who can hold large sets of same-ranked cards and deploy wild cards at the right moment. A 2019 study in the journal Cognition found that card games involving strategic planning help maintain executive function in older adults. Our version pits you against a CPU opponent in a race to 5,000 points. Start a game right now in your browser.
You have three Queens and a joker in your opening hand. Their combined value is 50 points (10 + 10 + 10 + 20). At a score of 0, the initial meld requirement is 50, so you can lay them down immediately and start building toward a canasta.
The discard pile has 12 cards with a joker near the bottom, making it frozen. You hold two natural 7s. You can pick up the entire pile, meld the two 7s with the top card (also a 7), and keep the remaining cards in your hand for future melds.
Your meld of Aces has six cards. You draw an Ace from the stock, completing a natural canasta. Your hand now has one card left. You discard it to go out, earning 100 bonus points plus 500 for the natural canasta. Your opponent loses points for every card still in their hand.
Play Canasta directly in your browser. No downloads, no registration. Our version includes a heuristic CPU opponent, automatic red 3 handling, frozen pile indicators, and full scoring with canasta bonuses. It works on desktop, tablet, and phone. Track your cumulative score across rounds and race to 5,000 points.

A canasta is a meld of seven or more cards of the same rank. A natural canasta contains no wild cards and scores a 500 point bonus. A mixed canasta includes one or more wild cards and scores a 300 point bonus.
The discard pile becomes frozen when a wild card (a 2 or joker) or a red 3 is in the pile. While frozen, you can only pick up the pile if you hold two natural cards of the same rank as the top card. The pile stays frozen until someone picks it up and melds it.
Your first meld of each round must reach a minimum point value based on your total score. Below 1,500 points you need 50. Below 3,000 you need 90. At 3,000 or above you need 120. Point values are based on the cards in the meld: jokers are 50, Aces and 2s are 20, 8 through K are 10, and 4 through 7 are 5.
No. You must have at least one canasta (a meld of seven or more cards) before you can go out. This rule prevents players from emptying their hand too quickly and forces them to build toward larger melds.
Canasta uses 108 cards: two standard 52-card decks plus four jokers. This gives eight cards of each rank (plus wild cards), making it possible to build large melds and canastas.
Canasta combines card collection, wild card management, and scoring strategy into a game where every discard matters. Build your melds, freeze the pile at the right moment, and race to 5,000. Deal a hand and start playing now.
