Kurodoko first appeared in Nikoli issue 34 in June 1991. Its clues count visible white cells in four orthogonal directions, including the clue cell itself, until a black cell or the grid edge blocks sight. You must also keep black cells from sharing an edge and preserve one connected white area. These linked rules exercise counting, connectivity planning, and contradiction checking. A clue 7 can currently see at most seven cells because borders and known black cells cap its four arms. Every candidate on those arms must be white. After marking them, the clue reaches seven, so any cell immediately beyond an uncapped arm must become black to stop further visibility.
Visibility logic forces one cell black. You mark all four orthogonal neighbors white at once. One neighbor extends a nearby clue's confirmed run from four to five, exactly its target. The next cell in that direction must now be black, producing a second wave of white neighbors.
Two large white areas connect through one undecided cell in a narrow corridor. If you shade that cell, no orthogonal route remains between the areas. Connectivity therefore forces it white. Its clue line can now see one extra cell, which settles the position of the final black blocker and completes the grid.
