Oberon Games developed Mahjong Titans, and Microsoft shipped it with Windows Vista in 2007 and later with Windows 7. That familiar computer puzzle trained players to scan layers, remember exposed symbols, and plan several removals ahead. The challenge comes from a strict geometry rule: every chosen tile needs a clear top and at least one open horizontal side. 1. Scan the highest layer and both ends of the Turtle. Select one bright, free tile, then select a second free tile with the same face. The pair leaves the board immediately.
2. Check freedom before planning a pair. A tile cannot have another tile overlapping it on a higher layer. It also needs open space along its left or right long edge. A tile with neighbors on both sides stays blocked.
3. Match Characters, Bamboos, Circles, Winds, and Dragons only with an identical face. Any Flower can match another Flower, and any Season can match another Season. A Flower and a Season never pair.
4. After each removal, inspect the tiles it uncovered or released at an edge. Keep removing legal pairs until all 144 tiles are gone. The display records time, moves, remaining tiles, and score.
5. Use Hint to mark an available pair. Undo restores the board before your last pair or shuffle. If no open match remains, Shuffle rearranges only the faces on tiles still in play.

• The deal uses 144 pieces in a five-level Turtle: 87 tiles on the base, then layers of 36, 16, four, and one. Higher tiles cover lower pieces where they overlap.
• Both tiles must be free when selected. A free tile has nothing overlapping above it and no touching tile on at least one horizontal side. Open space at a short edge does not count.
• The 34 ordinary faces appear four times each and require exact face matches. East Wind only matches East Wind, for example, and Bamboo 6 only matches Bamboo 6.
• The four Flowers form one matching family, while the four Seasons form another. Any two Flowers match. Any two Seasons match. Each family supplies two pairs.
• You win after removing all 72 pairs. If tiles remain with no legal pair, Shuffle or Undo can recover play. Neither tool removes a tile automatically.
• This is a one-player matching puzzle. Four-player mahjong uses hands, draws, discards, melds, and regional scoring. The games share tile imagery, but their objectives and rules differ.

• Prioritize coverage, not height alone. A top tile may cover four pieces at half-step coordinates. Compare pairs and remove the one that exposes the most covered tiles. More free tiles create more possible pairings on the next turn.
• Protect paired access. When three identical ordinary faces are free, inspect the fourth copy before choosing two. The wrong copies can strand the fourth under a tile whose mate has gone. Favor the copy that releases an edge or covered center.
• Balance the two wings. The Turtle's left head and right tail create early side access, but clearing one direction exclusively can leave long central rows pressed from both sides. Alternate useful removals so horizontal channels advance toward the middle from more than one edge.
• Spend flexible bonus tiles carefully. Every Flower matches every Flower, and every Season matches every Season. Treat each family as two wild pairs within its own group. Save a free bonus tile when another copy sits in a position that will release several lower tiles.
• Audit before the final third. At about 48 tiles remaining, pause and locate all visible copies of Winds and Dragons. These distinct faces offer fewer visual patterns than numbered suits, so blocked duplicates are easier to track. Use Undo immediately when a removal sharply reduces available pairs.

• Turtle Mahjong: Focuses directly on the famous layered shell arrangement and the same open-side matching logic. Choose it when you want another traditional Turtle presentation.
• Mahjong Connect: Places tiles on one flat grid. Pairs connect through a clear route with no more than two bends, so path planning replaces stacked-tile freedom.
• Mahjong Dimensions: Moves matching into a rotatable cube-like arrangement. Players search exposed 3D faces rather than opening the horizontal sides of a layered Turtle.
• Mahjong Flowers: Emphasizes the bonus families and offers a gentler way to practice the rule that Flowers match across their group and Seasons match across theirs.

• The board communicates progress clearly. A dense shell gradually becomes a few thin rows, and every upper-layer removal reveals real space underneath. Players can read the result of a good choice immediately.
• Sessions fit a short break while still supporting deliberate planning. The timer measures a run without forcing a countdown, so players can chase a quicker clear or pause to compare several candidate pairs.
• Tile recognition uses memory and focused visual search. Four copies of ordinary faces make simple matching insufficient; their positions decide which pairing keeps future access open.
• Helpful recovery tools reduce frustration. Hint identifies a legal option, Undo supports experimentation, and Shuffle handles a dead position while leaving the Turtle's remaining shape intact.
