4. Track the fleet inventory: one ship of length 4, two of length 3, three of length 2, and four submarines of length 1. The standard fleet totals 20 ship cells.
5. After placing a ship segment, mark all diagonally and orthogonally adjacent cells as water, since ships cannot touch each other.
6. Confirm every row and column total is satisfied and the full fleet is placed to finish the puzzle.

• Use column totals to verify row placements. A ship segment that fits a row but exceeds a column total is invalid, so mark it water.
• Look for forced ship orientations. A length-3 ship in a row with only three available cells must run horizontally across exactly those cells.
• Count remaining ship cells against remaining row and column totals. If the sums match, you can confirm the placement without checking each cell individually.
