Tetsuya Miyamoto, a Japanese math teacher, invented KenKen in 2004 as a classroom tool to teach arithmetic through pure logic. He wanted students to discover math patterns on their own, without lectures. The puzzle combines Latin-square placement with arithmetic cages: each grouped region must produce a target number using addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. A 2019 study in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry found that regular number-puzzle solving keeps the brain up to 10 years younger in adults over 50. A 4x4 grid has a single-cell cage with target 3. You write 3 in that cell. Now the rest of that row and column cannot contain 3, which immediately constrains neighboring cages.
A two-cell addition cage shows target 5 in a 4x4 grid. Both 1+4 and 2+3 are valid pairs. You check the row: one cell already has a 2 from another cage, and the other cell's column already has a 1. So the pair must be 2 and 3, placed to respect the existing constraints.
Late in a 5x5 puzzle, row 3 has four cells filled: 1, 5, 2, 3. The last empty cell must be 4. You place it, and this completes a multiplication cage in that row whose target was 12 (cells were 3 and 4). The puzzle finishes in seconds from there.
