Dominosa is a domino fitting puzzle disguised as a rectangular grid of numbers. You must divide adjacent cells into dominoes so that every unordered pair from the set appears exactly once. In a double-six puzzle, for example, 2-5 and 5-2 name the same piece, and each pair from 0-0 through 6-6 occurs once. The task develops exact-cover reasoning and candidate elimination because choosing one boundary removes a piece and two cells from every rival placement. The unused pair 0-6 appears only once among adjacent uncovered cells. You place that domino and cross 0-6 from the inventory. Three rival placements overlap its cells and disappear. One neighboring cell now has only a single available partner, so the next domino follows from coverage.
You have already placed a horizontal 2-5 domino. Later, adjacent cells show 5 above 2. That vertical candidate represents the same unordered pair, so you reject it. The lower cell has one alternative neighbor, forcing a different pair and preventing a duplicate hidden by orientation.
A tentative edge domino would separate five uncovered corner cells from the rest of the board. Dominoes cover cells in pairs, so no tiling can cover that odd region. You undo the candidate and choose its alternative. The corner remains connected to one more cell and accepts three dominoes exactly.
