With four free cells and one empty column, you can excavate a card buried under up to twelve cards.
Scenario 2: The empty column advantage. Column five is empty. You have a sequence of red Jack, black ten, red nine in column three that you want to move onto a black Queen in column seven. Move the red nine to the empty column, the black ten to a free cell, then place the red Jack on the black Queen. Now move the black ten from the free cell onto the red Jack, and the red nine from the empty column onto the black ten. The empty column made a three-card move possible.
Scenario 3: The foundation rush. You have moved Aces and twos to all four foundations. Three columns are nearly sorted. Do you send everything up? Check first. If a three of hearts is still buried, sending the two of hearts up is fine. Sending the four of hearts up might trap the three. Send cards up only when the card below them is already on a foundation or safely stored.
